Day 5 - Forgiveness through repentance

We all mess up! We all make mistakes and are in need of forgiveness (Romans 3:23). The guilt and shame that we feel from our past can be erased by forgiveness. When we are forgiven we are free, but in order to be forgiven there must first be repentance.

Repentance is the road that takes us to forgiveness. Repentance is no just feeling bad for what we done, so we say we are sorry. It’s not asking for forgiveness because we got caught. Repentance is a complete turning from our sin. It is a 180 degree turn from our wrong doing. We were once walking towards sin, now we turn our back completely and go towards God. This is repentance and true repentance brings forgiveness and a new chance.

People are looking to “make it right.” They want to “start over” and forgiveness through repentance offers this. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says that if we are in Christ we have become a new person. The old life we used to live full of our past failures and mistakes is now erased and a new life has begun. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hebrews and Psalms all promise and erasing of sin and guilt. True repentance erases your sins and guilt and allows you to walk free.

Ephesians 1:7 says that Jesus is so rich in kindness and mercy that this forgiveness and freedom we have was purchased through His blood. It is through the Cross that we can start a new life and find forgiveness through repentance.

How to repent:

  • Confess your sins. Go to God and ask Him for forgiveness.
  • Confess your sins to those you’ve wronged. Go to those you’ve hurt or wronged and ask their forgiveness.
  • Turn from your sin. Don’t go back. Don’t go back to that place or situation where you sinned.
  • Ask God for a hatred for your sin. The Bible tells us to love God and hate sin. True repentance is a righteous hatred for sin.
  • Walk in the freedom from guilt and shame that repentance brings.
